Course
The 10km course is a flat, off-road course through parkland, bush track and along the scenic Hutt River trail and is ideal for social and recreational runners and walkers.
The Half Marathon course is a challenging, off-road trail race. The 5km hill section is steep and the track is narrow in parts. It is best suited to experienced, long distance competitors with a high level of fitness. NB The Half Marathon course will have a cut-off time of 1hr 45min (walkers) and 1hr 10min (runners) enforced at the swing bridge (9.2km from start) which signifiies the start of the Cannon Point walkway. Race officials will eliminate from the event, any competitor unable to reach this point within the stipulated times.
Both courses are measured distances and commence from the Trentham United Harriers clubrooms. The 10km course heads north along the flat Hutt River Trail for 6.2km, to the turn-around point after the first water stop. The Half Marathon course extends on along the Hutt River trail, past the duck pond at Te Haukaretu Park, and across the Norbert Street Bridge. A right-hand turn after the bridge follows a trail to Bridge Road and up to a swing bridge which signals the start of the Cannon Point walkway. The trail continues along a gentle bush track to Birchville Dam where it becomes suddenly steep and extends to the top of the ridge, providing spectacular views of bush-clad hills and the Hutt valley. From here, the course undulates along a narrow clay track to the top of Cannons Point and onto the Zig-Zag track that descends steeply and emerges onto Totara Park Road. Crossing the Totara Park Bridge, the course then follows the Hutt River trail south back to Trentham Memorial Park, and finishes back at the Trentham United Harriers clubrooms.
The course is not suitable for pushchairs. Dogs are not allowed to accompany competitors on any part of the course and are not permitted on any part of the Cannon Point walkway. Trentham Memorial Park is a smoke-free zone.
